Hi again,
I want to say thank you so much for all of the love, support, and prayers that so many have poured out on our family and for baby Kenya. I can't tell you enough how much it means to us. I still am sorting through all of the messages via blog, facebook, email, skype, and phone. I apologize if I have not gotten back to you yet.
For those who would like to make a donation to help baby Kenya, checks may be made out to David DeYoung and mailed to this address:
32854 Red Oaks Trail
Beverly Hills, Michigan 48025
Dave has also set up a PayPal account that you can donate to that you should be able to find on the right side of the blog. Please let us know if this does not work for you. We are so thankful for these gifts so many have been so generous to share with us. This will help us in getting to the states and getting the medical help for Kenya that she desperately needs.
Right now Kenya is still having about 1-2 seizures an hour. The seizures are shorter in duration, lasting about 1-3 minutes - these are mainly focal seizures where her eyes roll back and she smacks her lips. We are also seeing what appear to be myoclonic seizures, where she jerks all of her limbs at the same time, but her face is alert and her eyes are open. We are not sure if that is what we are seeing or not. Sometimes we think we are also seeing absence seizures but again we are not sure about this. We are trying to upload videos onto youtube so if you would like to see this if you think you can identify what are and are not seizures, this would be very helpful to us, so just let us know.
We talked to the pediatric neurologist here and she recommended to keep Kenya on the 200 mg a day of Keppra and call her tomorrow around 10a.m. if she is still having seizures and they will add 20 of Phenobarbitral tomorrow if she is still having seizures. However, the doctors who we have talked to from the states feel that we should take her off the Keppra and just try the Phenobarbitral. We are having a hard time making the right decisions on our own. We are continuing to talk to the doctors we have been referred to in the states to make these decisions. We would be grateful for any additional advice you may have and will continue to keep checking the blog for this info.
We are trying to get into the American embassy but they are closed until Monday. We are trying to talk to whoever we can to pull strings to get us in there tomorrow and start the passport process. If you know of someone who could help put a word in for us, please let us know. I think the more people who can help with this, the better.
We have not decided yet where we will take Baby Kenya in the states for medical care. We are looking at Devos Children's Hospital, Detroit Children's Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, Shriner's Children's Hospital, and a few more. If you would like to share your opinion/experiences, please let us know. We prefer to stay in Michigan to be close to family, but are willing to take Kenya wherever she needs to go to get the best medical care.
Thank you again for the overwhelming amount of support, prayers, love, encouragement, and advice you have all been showering upon us. I will do my best to get back to each person as I am able, but right now a lot of our focus is just on Baby Kenya, her seizures, and the passport situation. But please know I am grateful to each and every one of you.
Please keep praying for Baby Kenya and that God will work a miracle in her and help us to get her the best medical help in the states.
Much love,
Kristin, Dave, and Kenya DeYoung
Kristin,
ReplyDeleteI live in grand rapids. Devos is about 15 minutes from my house. If you end up there please let me know. I have two little girls so we have all sorts of baby things and we have a guest room. Still praying for Kenya!

Hey Youngs,
ReplyDeleteReading this from a FB post by Elizabeth Hardin. We lived in Jarabacoa about for years, leaving 5.5 years ago. Our oldest son was born there in Santiago, and it grieves my heart that you had a traumatic experience.
We live outside of Cincinnati and take our 2 oldest boys (who has a mild brain malformation) to Cincinnati Children's. They are TOP NOTCH, we have seen a number of neurologists and nuerosurgeons...and my oldest still goes to Occupational Therapy there. The care and the expertise is amazing.
I see you mentioned Medicaid, which is totally a possibility...but you also need to get Kenya some BCMH (Bureau of Children with Medical Handicaps) coverage. Given her diagnosis thus far and your missionary level income, she would certainly qualify. You just need to find a pediatrician or neurologist that is a BCMH provider and start the application process. It can take a few months, but they pay for and "retro-pay" almost everything that your insurance doesn't pay for. BCMH is a federal program and should be available to you whereever you land.
I would be happy to talk to you more about it so you can understand...whenever you are ready. I know you are totally overwhelmed right now. I just wanted to make sure you knew about this option that would help you guys out financially. Pop me an email and I'll send you my cell.
We are praying for you, for Kenya's care, and for the passport process to be smooth and quick!

Kristen & Dave,
ReplyDeleteI just received a message from a friend about your situation! I work as an RN on the neonatal ICU at Universtiy of Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital. Unfortunately, we do have babies transported to us that have had a similar situation occur during birth. Dr. Barks is the head of our neonatology department and is very knowledgeable in this area. If you have a way to contact him via phone, please do:

I work tomorrow night; so, I will try to see if there is a way to get a message to him about your situation.
I am praying for you all and especially for baby Kenya! I am so sorry that this has happened to you--I sympathize with every parent that has to go through this experience!
God, may you receive all of the glory in all of this! Holy Spirit continue the healing process in this precious child's life! You knit this child together and know everything that is taking place in her body! Bring healing and new neuro pathways where there has been damage from our frailty! You are infinite in love and mercy! Show us that love so that we may give the same grace Lord! Give peace and wisdom to Kirsten and Dave, Abba! You hold baby Kenya and have never left! We praise You, Father, for all You are! Yes and Amen!
In Christ,
Meagan Olds
Kristen and Dave,
ReplyDeleteI am praying hard for your precious baby as well as for the two of you. I sent an Email to one of our Peace Corps doctors for advice and am hoping to hear back from her. However, the Peace Corps office is close to the American Embassy, do you think maybe anyone there would be of help? Worth a shot I would think. . . I am praying.
Hey there guys. I am praying for your all and have sent your blog to the Faith in Christ prayer wall. My experience has been with motts children's hospital in Ann arbor. I know that Medicaid will pay back what your insurance doesn't up to 6 months back. Also, I would seek out Children's special health care. This is a state insurance that is illness based, not income based. http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-132-2942_4911_35698-15087--,00.html
ReplyDeleteGod can do anything.. and we will be praying for a miracle.

We're praying hard for you guys. We live near Boston about 30 minutes from Boston Children's. If you end up there, you're more than welcome to stay with us.

Hello DeYoung's. I got your blog from a friend on facebook. I am so sorry for the incredible pain and uncertainly you are experiencing with sweet Kenya's medical condition. We are missionaries in Nigeria and while we haven't had a medical emergency with any of our children, we certainly can picture the scene of a third world hospital and the energy it takes to sort through legit information. I can't count how many times we've self-diagnosed and self-medicated! I used to work as a Child Life Specialist at DeVos Children's Hospital. As we are currently finishing up "home service" and are stateside, I actually just got a tour of the new hospital. It is an amazing place filled with amazing, equipped doctors and staff. I'll keep following your story to see where you end up. If you end up at DeVos, I'll be sure to tell my Child Life friends to watch out for you! Richest blessings to you as you continue this difficult path. Megan
ReplyDeleteHi Kristin.
ReplyDeleteBased on what I know, Kenya appears to be having a tonic-clonic seizure, also known as a grand-mal seizure. Normally, they are associated with violent shaking like a "typical seizure" however in infants it is common to have ones just like Kenya is having.
I hope this helps:)
And i know it is pretty far away, but CHLA(Childrens Hospital Los Angeles) in California has one of the top pediatric Neuro centers in the country!
And one more thing. Sorry I forgot this on the last one. CHLA also has a top ranking NICU, which she may need based on what you have said about her traumatic birth.
