School starts tomorrow!

Hola mi muñeca,

Schools starts tomorrow and summer has come to a close.  I'm not sure how long I'll get to write this as you nap the afternoon away on this rainy Labor Day but I wanted to write and say what a fun summer I've had with you and I'm thankful for each moment of it!  While I didn't get to many of my summer projects (like printing this blog), we did check almost everything off of the bucket list.  Some of our favorite summer memories include...

Vacation Bible School at church... you were in my class with the pre-schoolers and Kinders - it was all total Spanglish and chaos but lots of fun!!

Friendship bracelets

Memory verses

Playground time

Berry picking - We did strawberry picking, raspberry picking, fed animals in the petting zoo and ate ice cream!  We took Brandon (from church) with us once but he stomped on all the berries more than anything!

Fourth of July - We went to the parade in EGR, watched a waterski show, went to a picnic, and you fell asleep with me during the fireworks (you were not a fan and they went til 2am in our neighborhood)

Doughnut dates - We did these for filling your potty chart.... BUT when you saw your buddy Brandon was still in diapers you decided the potty wasn't cool anymore so you're back in diapers.  You are more into the potty though now that you see your cousins using it so maybe we're back on our way?  Either way we loved all the Krispy Kreme dates and even got to go with Auntie Lauren when she was visiting from London too!

Lake Michigan - It was more of a cool rainy summer but we tried to make it to the beach at least once a week.  You flew your first kite and you are actually liking the water now too!

Our trip to Indiana with the Stanley
Trips out of town - We went to stay with your grandparents, swam in Nana's pool, went on Auntie Melissa's paddle boat and mostly just tried to stay out of Daddy's hair while he fixed up the house (since we found out you are allergic to it).  He did an amazing job!

UMC Church Camp - We went down to Dowagiac and stayed at camp with all our Spanish speaking friends for a weekend.  We ate tons of amaaaazing Dominican and Mexican food, sang songs around the campfire, made s'mores and for me it was mostly all about getting closer to God.  Dad made you your own train, you swam in the pool, and on the way back we stopped to play your first game of mini-golf and sat in the pilot's seat of a plane at the Dowagiac airport!
Sitting in the pilot's seat of the airplane!

Dancing Queen
Taylor Wedding - We went to daddy's cousin's wedding which was the cutest wedding ever and you were rocking the dance floor all night long.  Even when you were the only one out there, you were the QUEEN of the dance floor.  They were cleaning up the wedding and breaking down tables and you were still out there busting a move!!!

DeYoung family reunion - We went to Van Buren Youth Camp this weekend for the fam reunion.  Your cousins Ana Leah and Rachel flew in from the DR and you have been loving it!  You have a sudden new love for Spanish and it makes your mama so happy!!  You liked sleeping in our special cabin, going on sailboat rides (not our first ones this summer) and playing in the sand.  I will have to add those photos later though cause they're not on the computer yet...

Here are a few other random favorite moments from summer....

Fredrick Meijers Gardens

Dinner out at Brann's

Helping in Mama's classroom

Emily's fairy princess birthday party
Bounce house at the party

Ice cream and story date during a thunder storm

Frozen sing-a-long in the front yard
Wagon rides with your BFF Stevie!
Making smoothies - Smoothies and Sesame Street were part of our daily routine!
Dinner at Cracker Barrel - spending Mama's giftcards!
Picnic at the airport, welcoming in the airplanes
Helping Mama around the house!
There are a million more things I could list but just know that I cherish each of these moments with you can't wait for more.  Tomorrow you start back with Ms. Abby who just had a baby and you are very excited to see her!!  Going back to school is bittersweet - I am ready for a routine again but will miss you so much!!  Hope this year is a little smoother than last so we can spend lots of QT this year hanging out together and making more memories.  Love you to the moon and back!!!!

Love,
Your mama

2 years later...

It is crazy to think that two years ago we were on a plane coming back from the DR to Devos children's hospital - I get chills and tear up just thinking about it.  It has been a while since I've written a real update since then.  I'm not really sure where to start with one now either but I guess I just feel like it is time.  When we were celebrating the 4th the other day, we started reminiscing back and remembered Kenya's first 4th of July.  She was laying nearly comatose in the NICU in the DR and I was laying on the floor outside, unable to see her and just praying and sobbing and begging God for a miracle when someone on the phone mentioned fireworks outside and it was hard to fathom that life continued in other parts of the world while it seemed to be crashing down all around us.  But the total miracle that we prayed for is what we got.  I get totally overwhelmed all over again just thinking back to those first weeks and the way Kenya was healed and her life was spared.  From her conception through pregnancy, birth and beyond, it has been a very rocky road and she has been our miraculous survivor through all of it.  I also will never ever forget the unbelievable amount of love and support that was poured into Kenya's life during those first weeks and months.  The endless amount of prayers, emails, notes, financial support, gifts, open arms, listening ears, words of advice, medical letters to get us out of country, and even people starting up support groups just to help us out will never ever be forgotten.  Though these very special people who dropped everything to help us may not have heard my words of gratitude in a while, please know that I will always hold a special place for every single one of you in my heart and will forever be grateful for the compassion you shed on our family.  From friends and family in the DR and Michigan, to acquaintances and strangers everywhere in between, we felt surrounded by angels throughout that entire experience and will forever be thankful to God for the miracle He worked in Kenya's life.  There were people who went to extreme measures to help us through that scary situation and when we tried to give our sincerest thanks, we just heard "thank God, He was the one who told us to help".  So we thank God and thank those of you who answered His call to reach out to help us.

2 years can make a world of difference...
So what's happened in the past two years since then?  It has been a rough road, but we have been blessed with so much along the way.  Kenya continues to grow and be a beautiful little miracle in our lives.  She brings us so much joy every day.  We are thankful she has not had any seizures since those first weeks of her life.  She has struggled with some chronic colds and issues and we are trying to rule out allergies/asthma.  But for the most part she has been our healthy little miracle and we are so thankful for that.

Dave is back working at Velocity selling bicycle rims and I am fortunate (especially in Michigan) after that first year at home to be teaching again - 3rd grade Spanish Immersion.  During those first months after Kenya's birth, I honestly did not think I would ever be able to teach or work again.  The injuries from Kenya's birth were so severe and life was so painful that it was hard to ever see any light at the end of the tunnel.  I couldn't see beyond my cloud of trauma and a trip to the grocery store felt like Everest.  Though I will always deal with the permanent injuries caused by her birth and the doctors' (there have been a lot of them) words have been less than encouraging, I do feel like I have come a long way and have made a ton of progress, especially when I think back to the first days of feeling so broken and destroyed.  But through this experience, I found myself connected to the millions of women in the developing world who are literally broken, paralyzed and destroyed by birth - who lose their babies and their dignity to injuries inflicted upon them by what should have been a natural and joyous event.  Even though I never would have chosen to have to suffer all of the pain that I have, I do think all of this was supposed to happen.  People have said that they can't understand why something so bad could happen to good people who were just out trying to do good in the world.  Though it took me a long time (and a lot of counseling) to get here, I can now accept that I was chosen for this to happen to me and God had a purpose behind my suffering.  Where millions of other women worldwide lose everything (including their babies and families), are literally shunned from their communities, have no access to healthcare and have no voice at all, I have been blessed with the exact opposite throughout this storm and I have the opportunity to be a voice for all of these women.  Sometimes I wonder if I will always feel pain from Kenya's birth and I think that pain (as mild it is usually is) is always there as a reminder - a voice of the millions of other women reminding me "we're still here, we're still suffering, we still need your help".  Though I haven't had much time to help these days, I believe I was chosen to raise awareness for these women and be the voice for those who don't have one.  For girls sold into marriage at a young age and forced to give birth before their bodies are ready for it.  For women who go into childbirth with greater risk than our soldiers, knowing they have a 1 in 6 chance of mortality.  For women who labor for days or even over a week only to give birth to a dead baby.  For women who are paralyzed and never walk again because of giving birth.  For women who are abandoned and literally shunned by their families.  For women who will be permanently incontinent and forever live in shame and disgrace... unless someone steps in to help.  Even though I would have never chosen to suffer the way I have (and trust me that it has been nothing compared to what these women endure), I am thankful for my injuries because they have connected me to this beautiful world of women who I really knew nothing about and who needed me to be their voice.  Those who know me already know that being a public "voice" is not my thing.  The first time I shared my story at a "Half the Sky" event, I'm not sure I even looked up once from my lap as I mumbled out my whole crazy story.  But each event led to another and people welcomed me and my terrible public speaking skills to come share my story at fundraisers and to nursing classes at WMU and Calvin.  And my hope is that my story (and those of millions of women I share about) will reach people who will be inspired to help.  Here is where I'd love to say now... now join me on my journey as I go and build a maternal healthcare center to help these women in Africa (I do dream of this all the time).  But with my hands full with teaching and Kenya and lots of student loans to pay off, I'm definitely not there yet.  What I do hope is that I can raise awareness, continue speaking, hold more fundraisers and that my voice will bring light to the women who don't have a voice and who continue to suffer everyday without hope.  And I do hope that you will partner with me in helping these women and being their voice, just as you have helped and support Kenya and I in tremendous ways.  Let me know if you want to find out how you can get involved. :)  I have already met some incredible people who are already working in this arena and hope I can be a support to them.

While this update is already turning into a novel, I guess that leaves me with a few questions that I have been asked a lot lately - really it seems like every day so I will just put it out there.  People always ask if I can have more children - and while a few (often unsuspecting) people have listened to me pour my heart out on the topic (like a few of my new co-teachers who just come in my classroom to talk about a Math lesson or something, bless their hearts), it is not really something I like to talk about as casually as what I'm having for dinner (not that I don't appreciate the concern).  There really isn't a definite answer.  When I first came back from the DR, I was told to give myself three years for total healing and before thinking about more kids... but then they found a lot more internal damage.  I was told that on a scale of 1 to 5, that six weeks after birth those muscle groups should be back at a "5".  For me 3 months after Kenya's birth, they were less than a 1.  After one year of intense pelvic floor rehab (which I'm thankful for but was not fun), I was told the muscles were still less than a 1 and that there was just "way too much trauma".  After a year of hearing discouraging news week after week, I stopped going to doctors (and just got super consumed with teaching too).  I do feel like despite their reports, I have come a LONG way and am so grateful.  Two years ago, I couldn't even stand long enough to take a shower and even walking across the room was so incredibly painful and the idea of riding around in a wheelchair while sitting on a big pool tube kept me from going out in public much.  It does scare the daylights out of me to ever think about going back to that lonely place in my life that another pregnancy could bring me back to.  Another pregnancy would come with huge risks, not just that of being able to safely carry a baby to term, but also of doing much further damage to my body.  My bladder and intestines were also damaged in Kenya's birth, but I have thankfully refused all surgeries and have been happy with my albeit long healing process - putting the pressure of another pregnancy on my body could put it into a much worse place that I don't want to have to live with (i.e. a colostomy bag or even worse).  So I don't believe having more children biologically is something that is in my future as much as that always breaks my heart to say (especially over and over again).  I do however have (and have always had) a strong desire in my heart to adopt a child (or children) and that is something we definitely want to explore when we are ready.  I know that's a lot of personal information for any random reader to digest but I wanted to put it out there since it's something I'm asked about what seems like everyday lately.

The last piece... will we ever go back to the DR? (I get asked this one a lot too)  No definite answer here either.  I guess the answer is "if/when God wants us to".  It's hard to understand why I was presented with the dream opportunity of opening a home for girls only to have it stolen from under me so quickly.  I know there are people who have been disappointed in our decision to stay back in the states, but believe me when I say there is no one who had a harder time accepting this than we did.  I miss the DR every. single. day.  And though Kenya's birth experience was absolutely horrific, this experience was the exception to our time there.  It was the most incredible experience with some of the most beautiful, kind-hearted and amazing people I have ever met.  I miss those people and my time there every day.  God worked things out for us right here though too.  While I will always miss those very special people who became our family in the DR, we live just 2 blocks away from an awesome Spanish speaking church which we love that has a majority Dominican population (what are the odds right?).  I have a class of kiddos who I can speak to in Spanish all day everyday and share my experience with (at least the parts that are appropriate for 8 year old ears) and hope they will be inspired to change the world in their own ways using their gift of being bilingual (I've seen them already pour into humanitarian efforts in extraordinary ways and have been so incredibly proud of them this year).  More than anything, I have my family here and we are (mostly) pretty healthy and I could never ask for more than that (though of course I often do).  While someday I would love to be back in the mission field (abroad) and be in Latin America, that is on God's time and for now we are thankful to be able to bloom in the community we are in right here in West Michigan.

So I guess that's it for my update.  Sorry to be so longwinded but I'm sure anyone who has read my blog is used to that by now. :)  Thank you for the continued prayers and for being a part of our family's journey.  It has been a rollercoaster but I thank God everyday for the blessings and angels He always provides along the way.

Daddy's got a new name...

Dear Kenya,

These days you like to copy your mom and call your dad "hey babe".  You say to me that "hey babe" is downstairs or "hey babe" is outside or my favorite is when you call him for something and yell "Hey babe!  Come here!"  You're the best and you keep us laughing!  Love you girl!!  7 more school days left til it's just me and you - ahhhh!!!

Mother's Day and more...

Dear Kenya,

I just wanted to write quick (if I'm really capable of writing anything quick) to tell you what a special week this has been!!  Lucky for me, Teacher Appreciation week and Mother's day come in the same week, so I've been showered with gifts!!  You learned a song at daycare called "I love Mommy" and have been singing it non-stop (though when I tried to video it you inserted some lines about poop which I think you picked up from some of the older boys at daycare but ni modo)... and you've made me all kinds of sweet projects (have I mentioned that I love your teacher?).  My favorite was when you came home the other day and showed me a picture you made that said "Mommy, you are my sunshine" and you pointed to your scribbles in the middle of the sun and read each line to me, "I love you Mommy".  You seriously melt my heart.  You and Daddy picked out flowers and all kinds of fun treats and labeled them with silly notes - like Jelly Bellies that said "Because you carried me in your belly" and peanut M&M's which read "Cause you're kind nutty".  You guys are the best!!  You are the greatest gift I could ever ask for and I am so blessed to be your mom!!  Thank you for bringing so much joy to my life everyday.  You are our little miracle.  Love you to the moon and BACK!!

 Love, Your Mama

P.S. I started writing this last weekend and now I'm finishing it on a Saturday in my classroom... sigh.... so I just had to add this little tidbit... you are finally going on your "big girl potty", like almost every night.  Dad strips you down and you zoom past me through the living room with blonde hair flying and naked little booty bouncing.  When we hear your toilet start singing, you run out all proud, doing this dance where you gallop around in circles (still naked mind you) saying "go Kenya, go Kenya", grinning ear to ear.  I need to get a video of it one of these days but don't think I'll ever put it on the internet.  Anyways you are the best chica!!

And here are a few pics since I've written last...

At church on Easter with friends

Easter dress (your matching sweater was in the wash - oops)

Crown from Miss Abby's house (sorry that's all I can say because I refuse to call you a princess)

Amigas from our neighborhood

Sweet Bird jammies (your fave) - I think from the Dominican maybe?

This is what I wore to school for our big Cinco de Mayo fiesta - even though my kids informed me that "this isn't really a Mexican holiday Sra. DeYoung, only Americans celebrate it...  I changed first before going to the Mexican restaurant but took you out in this outfit - you can get away with it cause you're way cuter ;)
14 more days of school til I get to spend all summer with you!!!!
 I can't wait!!!!

21 months - Spring breakin and lovin it!!!

 21 months!!

Hey Kenya Kay,

We are on Spring break now and loving every second of it!!  You are taking a nap so I'm trying to write a quick blog in between laundry loads...  I can't believe it's been 3 months since I've blogged last, it all seems like a big blur now but I'll try to catch you up with some pics and stats.

You are getting so big (and heavy) and talking so much more.  You use 4+ word sentences and some of your choice phrases crack me up.  Of course they're all escaping my brain right now but your phrase of the week is "No more work Mom!" and "Mommy Kenya day" cause we are loving Spring break together!  Your favorite color is still orange and you want everything to be orange, but red, purple and green are close runners-up.  You were pretty disappointed the other day when you got a pink balloon from Krispy Kreme but we managed to keep it together and be appreciative (though we did have a total melt-down at Toys R Us cause the pink golf club was in the clearance bin and the orange one wasn't - we redirected the meltdown and still came home with the pink one which I'm not sure was worth the $1.50 we saved on it but you are learning I don't give into your tantrums or cuteness as quickly as everyone else).  You always ask for orange peppers and cheez-its, but cucumbers are another new favorite food too.  With your love for orange has also come a love for all kinds of construction and trucks (though trains are still your fave and you are so happy the weather is nice so we can book it running down the block to see it as soon as we hear the whistle).  Your Uncle Bradley has promised to buy you an orange van (and an anteater) for your 32nd birthday, but somehow after meeting the Easter bunny (from a distance cause you were not about to sit on his lap) at the mall the other day you're convinced the Easter bunny is bringing you an orange truck even sooner for Easter (which you talked about the whole ride home).  You have a new aficion (I'm thinking in Spanish now and can't come up with the English word) for Elmo lately and are obsessed with www.sesamestreet.org where you bang on the keyboard like it's your job.  Your new favorite song is Wheels on the Bus where you make up all kinds of new verses about anyone new you meet like Bob (from Daddy's work) on the bus goes "bob, bob, bob" and your Uncle Bone (our friend Brian from the DR who you nicknamed) goes "bone, bone, bone"... I think you have at least 20 verses now (some we will leave off the blog cause I'm not sure who reads it or if they would like how you identify them ;)... speaking of embarrassing things you point out, these days every type of skin bump, bruise, freckle, pimple, spot, or anything else is a "rash" (which you call "ash") and are not afraid to point out on anyone you meet either (especially me of course), or sometimes you walk around holding your booty when you have a diaper rash saying "ash, ash, ash" which of course sounds like something else and has random mama strangers shooting me looks...

Well the laundry is ready to change now and I'm not sure how much longer you'll nap so time for the photo roll and then our Spring break recap (I'm so sad it's coming to an end)...

Your 2nd Valentine's day was celebrated with everything heart shaped... from pancakes to cucumbers to pizza!!!

You were pumped when I brought home my Valentine stash from my kiddos - they sure know how to treat a teacher right!
You and your dad have been doing afternoon tea parties every afternoon (until he went back to work full-time at Velocity last week :*( - you always yell out "Tea's On Dad!" - sometimes you try to drink all the creamer while he's getting the tea ready!

You and your dad made this huge abstract art piece together one day and Santa added to it by running across it and leaving our carpet all kinds of stained... now it's framed and hanging on our living room wall :)
You and cousin Gav hanging out at the rehearsal dinner for Auntie Kaitlyn's wedding in Detroit!

Hanging out at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and showing off the collage you made!  We went with Auntie Jess and Uncle Bone - our long lost friends from the DR who moved to GR (we couldn't be more excited!)

Your Nana brought out early Easter treats when she came out to visit!!

Which I think brings us to... Spring Break!!!

We started vacation off in style with free balloons, doughnuts and hats from Krispy Kreme.  You loved watching the doughnuts go through the machine with your face pressed up against the glass alongside a bazillion other curious kids.  This was the first of three trips this week - now you walk in like you own the place. (and we did buy a dozen doughnuts for Daddy's work the other day... we're not total freeloaders ;)

Friday night was family date night at Noodles & Company thanks to our friend Dom Ford!!  Then it was off shopping at Home Goods which was the worst idea ever  (we will not take you back until you're a teenager as it almost cost us hundreds of dollars in damage).  Then it was back to Krispy Kreme because it was a very windy stormy night and your balloon from the morning was violently sucked away which you were traumatized by.  Even after a new ORANGE balloon you still cried for the green one that was sucked into the sky.  Now when we drive by Home Goods you talk about (and sometime cry for) your balloon going bye-bye to be with Jesus.

Saturday we went to see Tia Melissa's (which you love saying) new house in Mason!  She treated us to tostadas and some cool treats from Panama and Cuba!

Then it was off to four days on the east side to visit friends and family.  Your Grandma Dorr had just had spinal surgery so you were very into taking care of her by bringing her every toy in the house.  You didn't sleep a wink being in a different place and were running around the kitchen at 2am so I'm not sure how much help to Grandma we were really were.  The weather was beautiful so we had fun walking around downtown Royal Oak and Uncle Bradley took us to the Detroit Zoo.

Bird House

We could not get out of the park without riding the carousel (no matter how much Uncle Bradley tried to distract you)

having too much fun
We got to see Auntie Tracey and baby Sawyer at PF Chang's and hang out in the Spring exhibit at Somerset and go across the Sky Bridge (which took foreeever)... you could easily find mom's pink car in the parking lot looking down (I think it's pretty easy to find a beater among all the jags and BMW's)...

You and cousin Gav also had too much fun playing and had some serious dance parties as well.  He taught you how to do "party hands" and now you love to raise the roof all over the place.

Now we're back to home sweet home, you are sleeping again and we're just having fun hanging out.... I'm just loving eating breakfast together, cuddling up on the couch to Sesame Street, feeding the ducks (with Mama's friend Kelly), reading stories (Guess How Much I Love You? is your favorite lately to act out), going to parks to play (you can spot a park from a mile away) and anything else...

playing in the front yard
Yesterday we made the trek to the Critter Barn in Zeeland for their Spring Fling... you were in HEAVEN holding baby ducks and bunnies and even feeding a baby goat milk from a bottle!

Hen house

Baby bunnies

feeding the goat

baby lamb

up close and personal with your favorite animal in the world!
selfie with Mama outside the barn - if only I had time for photo shop ;)

One last piece of news... we have baby birds!!  Juan Pablo and Fiesty had babies and you love to talk about them!  Your beloved Tuky (our favorite bird) passed away which you haven't forgotten, you talk about him all the time still and pray for him every night (he is also with Jesus and the green balloon).  Grandpa and Grandma are back home from Mexico now though so I think we're taking all the birds (I've lost count how many) back down to their real home in Kalamazoo.  We're going to have a cook-out tomorrow and wish great Grandma DeYoung (you say "Bate Bamma") a happy 91st birthday.  She just came home from traveling (and dancing) around Spain on her own - how hip is that for a 91 year old?

Well chica, you'll probably wake up any minute so I'll end this novel of a blog entry now.  As we say every night in your bunny book... I love you SOOOOOOOO much - to the MOON and back!!!!!!

Love always,
Your Mama

19 months - and snowed in!!!

19 months!

Hey Kenya Kay,

You are sleeping away this snowy snowy day!!  It is snow day #6 this year and I haven't been into work since Thursday.  Of course I love the extra time with you but I think we're all getting a little stir crazy being snowed in for so long!!  Plus you are sick so your daddy and I are sleeping in shifts since you wake yourself up coughing about every 5 minutes, and if we don't catch you quick enough you cough and cry so hard that you puke all over the place... i.e. you know how to keep snow days from getting boring chica. ;) This is like the millionth time you've been sick so finally this week we decided to pull you out of daycare for good.  Since you were totally healthy we thought you'd get one last day to say good-bye to your teacher and friends but it wasn't the best idea cause you just got sick again.  While you'll surely miss your awesome teacher Mrs. Cadence and friends, you are a lucky girl to have the best stay at home daddy in the whole world.  He has been using our new Ninja all the time to make you power smoothies (not as intense as Auntie Pam's green flashes though) and is becoming a regular at the health food stores trying to boost your poor weak little immune system.  We're glad you are a fighter and have such a positive attitude through all of the struggles and we can still have a good time even on sick, snowy days...  and with with all of the garlic oil, oregano oil and all the holistic remedies we're trying, you're smelling like a little Italian kitchen!! Here are some photos of you staying busy on these snowy days:

"Babies" are your new fascination - you love putting them to sleep, patting them on the back, crawling around like a baby while saying "baby", and "animal babies" is your new favorite video!

Here you are baking cinnamon hearts - this is right before you dumped a cup of water all over them - oops!  They still turned out okay :)

Pulling an all-nighter with dad and hijacking Mommy's phone while she was sleeping

Playing with some new Charlie Brown stuffed animals from your Auntie Julie

Such a daddy's girl - he can always make you laugh!

Making homemade jello play-doh

Orange, which you call "non" (with a long o) is your very favorite color and always your first pick!
In addition to the four batches of play-doh and baked goods, we've also been making lots of paintings and valentines (but mostly we've just made a lot of big MESSES).  Dad says going to the basement is the most exciting part of your day since we can't leave the house.  We are up to 15 birds now (Daddy has been helping your grandpa sell birds as a side business) and you love going to say hi to them all.  Some of their names include Mr. L (L for loudmoth), Tuki (after the burrito song), Juan Pablo (after the Bachelor, we're ridiculous), Chicharron, Fiesty, Hothead, Chevron, Threads, Twinkletoes... I can't remember the others.  We switch out which ones we keep upstairs and have decided that Tuki definitely sings the best tunes.  You also love going down in the basement to bang on your daddy's drums - you are getting really good.  When you were the flower girl at cousin Casey's wedding, we couldn't keep you away from them, you kept running to the front of the church and trying to play them til the pastor there told us no more.  I know when you see them at our church you are always itching to get up there and play too.

Some other fun trips this month have been your first time to the Tarry Hall roller rink and first time to Chuck E Cheese's.  My students won a skating party for raising the most money at our Fun Run so we all got in for free.  We started by pushing you in a stroller around the rink but you were so adamant that you wanted to get up on skates of your own.  The smallest they had was size 7 which was way too big and we just couldn't make it work.  So you hung on the sidelines with Daddy while I did laps with my students (they were holding me up after 20 years off skates) and I gave you high fives each time I came around (which you were always ready and waiting for).  My students all looove you like crazy and you love soaking up the attention by giving them hugs and blowing them kisses.  And I just loved the FUN quality time with them and you - it sadly is a rare occasion when my mind isn't flooded with thoughts of test scores, data, planning, grading and the like - all part of being a teacher these days.

Chuck E Cheese's trip was to say good-bye to your nana before she went to Florida and to celebrate the engagement of two very special people - your Uncle Bradley and soon to be Auntie Jenna!!  Your favorite part was driving the race car (just like your dad).  Uncle Bradley won you lots of tickets so we got to bring home some cool prizes like an air rocket which you love shooting at your mom, dad and Santa (thankfully it's made of foam so it doesn't hurt).  Their wedding is set for September 6th and you get to be a flower girl again!

You were okay driving the car with this mouse...

but you were not a fan of the real Chuck E Cheese and were really nervous about all the characters dancing on stage

having fun with Nana
Photo with the lovebirds - soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Dorr!!!

Okay well this is the 2nd time I've written this blog and it keeps deleting for some unknown reason (I should move to handwritten letters one of these days) so I'm going to try and publish.  The snow day calculator is predicting 91% chance of another snow day tomorrow!  Crazy crazy... see you soon when you wake up - hope you are healing in your sleep!!!  Love you more than anything in the whole wide world - to the moon and back!!!

Love, Your mama
